The Detroit Social Justice Initiative will introduce students to the sociological and human rights concepts that are fundamental to understanding social justice. Participants will be exposed to historical and modern day inequalities that call for the social justice movement, learning to view many topics through the lenses of race, class and gender.

Activities will focus on Social Justice as a whole. This curriculum focuses on an African American centered approach to social justice exploring how race intersects with other social justice concepts: Including a definition of key words: Racism, prejudice, dismantle, while privilege, anti-racism, etc.). Icebreakers, games/ activities, PowerPoint presentations and speakers will assist with making this difficult topic a fun and engaging learning experience.

Each week we will explore one of the following topics: Introduction, definition & history of Social Justice, Racism in Detroit/Michigan, Racism in education K-12, Racism in healthcare, Racism in politics/legal system, Racism on college campus. Small Group Project: How to create positive change in your community- Final week – Group Presentations.

  • Emergency Preparedness.

Students can also earn the following certifications:

  • OSHA 10
  • Blueprint Reading
  • Lean Six Sigma (white belt)
  • Recreational UAS Drone Safety Test
  • “Scratch Programming Language”

Headed by Coach Bing, this program will meet on Saturdays at The Corner Ballpark. Qualified and eligible participants will be prepared for summer employment opportunities.

SAY Detroit BONUS: SAY Play members who wish to participate in the Drone Apprenticeship Program will be able to have extra learning sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays (at SAY Play) AND will have their $50 registration fee waived.
