Volunteering & Working at S.A.Y. Play

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the S.A.Y. Detroit Play Center at Lipke! You will have the opportunity to work with students in grades three through twelve to help them become great readers and people, changing the game for our youth.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. The current volunteer and part-time employment categories are listed below. For your convenience, we have created an online application system.

We are using a proven tutoring method in partnership with SOAR Detroit, and you will work one-on-one or small group sessions with students. This is a dynamic and unique opportunity to not only give back, but also create meaningful and lasting relationships with our students, and we will give you the training you need to be successful.


Reading assistants are a paid part-time staff to assist academic activities in The DEEP (Digital Education Enrichment Program). In addition to working as a reading mentor and tutor, reading assistants are responsible for preparing The DEEP for daily individual tutoring sessions, as well as scheduled group activities and other academic sessions. Hours are Monday - Friday, 3-6pm. 


We are always looking for great people who love kids and have a heart to coach a sports team (basketball, baseball, football, soccer, softball) or teach dance and karate. Karate and dance instructors are paid at an hourly fee, and we have  stipends available for one head coach and one assistant coach for each sports team. Availability and scheduling vary seasonally.
