Connecting Virtually With Our Students at Home

Jun 20, 2020 | News + Updates | 0 comments

While our facility was closed to ensure the safety of our student members, we remained committed to bringing our social and emotional learning curriculum into the homes of our members every day. The DEEP (Digital Educational Enrichment Program) team sought to provide students a virtual learning space after school, Mondays through Fridays, where they could enjoy elective classes like arts and crafts, athletics, science, social media, design and marketing. Classes ran May – June 12, 2020.

Educational activity bags were supplied bi-weekly from April through June.

Essential to carrying out our mission and vision for the SAY Detroit Play Center was maintaining dedicated, one-on-one check- ins with our members and their families. We called over 120 families and hosted parent Zoom meetings to check in on our families and offer support resources.

A guest speaker series invited Detroit and national entrepreneurs, coaches, professional athletes, and artists to share their knowledge and experience with our SAY Play students via Zoom. Guests were Joe Boylan, Assistant Coach and Director of Player Development for the New Orleans Pelicans, Langston Galloway, Detroit Pistons shooting guard, Allante Steele, artist and entrepreneur, and Tommey Walker, founder and CEO of Detroit vs. Everybody.

In vans that normally bring students from partner schools to the Center and then home each night, Herb Hayden led the operations team in delivering more than 10,000 Mindful Meal pouches from Clean Planet Foods to the homes of member families between March and June. Thank you the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation for funding safe and reliable transportation for our students, in any form.
