Summer stories to remember

Aug 23, 2022 | News + Updates | 0 comments

For six weeks this summer in July through August, more than a hundred students attended a free camp at SAY Play, including Grow Detroit’s Young Talent (GDYT) members who served as counselors. Our free camp offers education, enrichment, and loads of fun. Activities include dance, music, art, fashion design, gardening, drone exploration, STEM classes, sports, robotics, and more. We also go attended field trips each week, integrating college tours, learning opportunities, and fun excursions. Trip destinations included Metro Detroit Youth Day, Charles Wright Museum, Underground Railroad, Bandy’s Ranch, TreeRunner Adventure Parks, Urban Air, Monroe Street Midway, and Diamond Jack’s River Tours.

The high school co-hort was also enrolled in a special entrepreneurship course and marketing competition programmed by the Detroit Pistons and funded by the Tom Gores Family Foundation during the 2021 annual SAY Detroit Radiothon.

This year at the SAY Detroit Summer Camp, each middle school cohort used their skills in writing, editing, photography, and design to create a digital publication recapping the wonderful summer we had together. Students were split between three departments: writers, photographers, and designers. Working together, they covered field trips, activities, and conducted interviews with SAY Play students and staff. While looking through these publications, we hope you’ll be as inspired as we are by the intelligent, creative, and enthusiastic youth of SAY Detroit.
