Apr 11, 2017 | News + Updates | 0 comments

Detroit PAL celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day this year through an essay contest open to all 2017 PAL middle school volleyball players.

The girls were asked to write an essay on the prompt:

What opportunities have you experienced through your participation in sports? How have these opportunities contributed to your success as an athlete and as a student?

Girls from the JV (5th and 6th grade) and Varsity (7th and 8th grade) Detroit PAL volleyball leagues submitted their entries to be judged. All essays were judged on the incorporation of the theme, originality and grammar/spelling.

Kennedy Ellis, the JV Essay Contest Winner, is a member of SAY Play’s Lady Warriors JV volleyball team. When she started playing volleyball this season, it was the first time she had participated in a sport before. Although she was nervous, she practiced hard, made new friends, and improved a lot over the season. Kennedy, who has a 4.0 GPA at school, was chosen to represent her team at the JV All Star game, even though it was her first year playing the sport!
